If you're reading this entry, you're probably looking for someone to beta your work. I've created this entry because I send a similar message to all my authors, so I figured it would be best to just direct them to one place. So, let me give you a quick run down of how I beta, and then you can read over your guidelines for submitting your manuscript to me.

What Stories am I Interested in Betaing?

Honestly, I'm not too picky. I've betaed everything from young adult novels to erotica. I do enjoy a good historical fiction or contemporary novel. After a few run ins with fantasy novels, I tend to shy away from them now, but I'm still willing to take a look at it. Fanfiction is also welcome if I'm familiar with the series.

As far as length in concerned, anything is fine as long as you are patient about turn around time.

What Kind of Beta Am I?

I'm a line by line kinda girl. I have a lot of problems just reading over a chapter and not correcting grammar, spelling, etc. It's just easier for me to be very meticulous about it, so if you don't have a problem with it, that's the way I'd like to handle the manuscript.

Since you're requesting to have your work betaed, you can expect me to point out errors that I see. I'm not bitchy about it or anything, but I will let you know where you have some problems. I also try to provide explanations for why whatever it is isn't working and also suggestions for fixing any problematic areas. I know I've improved because of someone calling me out on points in my stories that don't make sense, and my writing has improved ten fold for it. I think yours will too. It's not all about pointing out errors though. I'll definitely let you know when I like something!

Turn Around Time

I try to get through a chapter a day normally; however depending on how many other manuscripts I'm betaing or how busy I am with college, this is subject to change. I will return the chapter to you as soon as I'm done with it so you can begin to look over it and decide if you want to make changes or not.



Read Me!

Be aware of this before submission: I take betaing very seriously and can spend upwards of 3 hours on a chapter (depending on length). If I'm taking all this time out of my day (without compensation, no less), I expect you to seriously consider all of my suggestions. You may have a different opinion than me and end up not changing something that I feel needs changed, which is totally fine, but please be considerate and accept that there may be problems that need to be addressed.

I have had two instances where I've been asked to beta and the author either: A) acknowledge that the story was flawed but didn't want to change it because it was too much work, or B) didn't think that anything was wrong (that it was just a matter of style) and refused to take my suggestions into consideration no matter what.

Please make your email subject your manuscript's title along with your name and include the first chapter or two with that (I use Word 2003, so make sure it's compatible). Let me know if there are any things in particular you want me to look out for (characterization, etc.) or specific areas you are having problems with. I'm more than happy to help!

After reading the first chapter, I'll let you know my first impressions and whether or not I think the story is one that I can beta. It's nothing personal if I don't think I can. Also, I reserve the right to stop betaing the manuscript if I feel like we aren't well suited for working together (but I haven't stopped betaing for someone much in the past).

I normally don't devote the time to actually sit down and write a full journal like this, but I've been compelled to by this certain issue. Over the course of this year, I've read two articles about elementary students (5 and 8 years old) getting the shaft-- also, they happen to be autistic. Every time I read these articles, I get so pissed off at how school systems are treating children with disabilities. Just because these children are different from the average child does not mean that they should have a different set of rights and rules applied to them. They have more needs and require patience and understanding from those around them. Yet time and time again, they are denied that.

I understand that the public school system doesn't always accommodate these students, or that they can't (despite all the funding they get when every special needs child enters their school system). I also understand that not every teacher is aware of the specific difficulties a child might have when they have autism. What I do know is that, as a person going into early childhood education, if I were to have any special needs child in my classroom, you can bet that I'd try to make myself as aware of the symptoms that go along with that condition as possible. As an educator, I'm responsible for teaching these children the very foundation that they will require to become successful individuals. And they can become successful. It may not be the way some people view "successful," but it's success all the same.

I'd like to bring to your attention the story of Evelyn Towry and Carter Kalbfleisch. I really encourage you to read their stories, as heartbreaking and infuriating as they are.
